I have entered the unknown land of ZIP DRIVES an area on the computer I am not familiar with so after reading the assigned chapter, watch the youtube video Mr. F. did I felt like I needed more help in understanding this concept so where do I go… http://www.ask.com is one of my favorite sites to use when I don’t know the answer or need more understanding this one and http://www.wikipedia.com are first one just to get an idea of what it all about. Neither one of these two websites are ones that professors prefer but they are ok for the basic first introduction to the subject matter. Easy to use just type in your question on ask.com and it will take you to serveral choices of answers. On Wikipedia it goes right to the page and gives a general guide to what it is about. Both of these together really help in understanding the subject and eventually get you what you need to finish the assignment. If not you can always ask the teacher. I hate sounding stupid when I ask a question that one may figure everyone should know but I have learned through my years at the library. There are NO stupid questions, so best deal is to ASK whether it be a website like ask.com or Wikipedia.com or your teacher or anyone. Better to learn and know than not…check them out you will be surprised at what you can learn and know…..
As I waiting patiently for the snow to arrive which it did this evening soo beautiful falling out of our southern sky:) I decided I really needed to do some more productive work in my class Web 110 LN1 and stop wasting time. I am trying to understand zip files, what they are and how we use them. Interesting theory but I not really getting it with our reading. So Mr. F. put videos on our blackboard to watch in the hopes of us to better understand the concepts. They are really good. He did it on http://www.youtube.com which allows really anyone to make a video, post it and watch it. There are a lot of them out there on everything. My 13 year old daughter loves them. A couple of Christmases ago we were trying to put our Christmas tree lights and tree together but was not having much luck so youtube.com came to our rescue with a video she watched and wow it was done. So now whenever I don’t know how to do something I have the option of looking up an youtube on it. A lot of times it is just the tip needed to understand a concept or to get through an assignment, whatever it is it does work. Check it out. With the click of your finger the answer is right there.
Well the South is still waiting on the expected snow to fall, so what do you do while waiting for this wonderful event to happen. You can immerse yourself in classwork understanding zipdrives which I not sure about or you can explore the internet weather sites which I have truly done (see previous posts) or you can go do genealogy on the website I like Http://www.ancestry.com an awesome website for all genealogists. It has everything, census, immigration records, voting ,birth and death records its all there and pretty easy to find. I love it but only bad thing is it does have a fee to join. You can go on free for three months then pay to continue for another 3 months or you can pay for a year. Its worth it. especially in my case where I am unable to drive and go to the courthouses that have these records. I have founds 13 generations of a family on this awesome site. You just keep clicking back on each of the census records. Its amazing to me how much can be found when searching for one family. You will end of surprised. But the deal to remember is that family names may have changed. Ancestry is aware of all these holes and keeps you in the loop with what might be a link to a family member. You can make your own family tree and they add leaves to it as a new clue which may or may not be a part of your tree. Its a never ending puzzle and with the success of the website and the tv show Who do you think you are, many people are seeking out these clues which is such a part of who we are.. So check out Ancestry.com it may have who you are looking for…. even on a snowy day….
Snow, Snow, Snow the South is getting Snow! That is at least what the Weather channels on tv and on the web are telling us. Since this is a rare appearance for us southerners. I been checking out the weather websites as I always done as well as the news channels. Everyone has their own answer. Soo who is the best one as for websites that can give us a forecast. I go with http://weatherbug.com and http://twc.com and also http://www.weather.gov/. All three are awesome website for all weather-related details. weatherbug.com I like for its user friendly look and I have it as an icon on my desktop, it also flashes alerts so I am always kept on top of any new developments. really cool. just type in your location, install and its free so that’s always a plus. The weatherchannel.com is another choice its more technology and not in my opinion as user friendly from all I can tell they charge to install it but its still a good one but I prefer it on tv. Weather.gov is the big official one to go to, it has everything relating to weather. It can be downloaded but I haven’t done it yet. A friend of my brags about it so today we compared them meaning the weather.gov and my favorite WeatherBug.com and for most part they deliver the same forecast only shy ten degrees such as 60 percent at one point on weather.gov and 70 percent on weatherbug.com. The weather channel was at the 70 percent range. but they were stating more icy conditions than snowy where the other two were stating more snowy. I like weatherbug as I said for its friendly look but weather.gov for its accurate reports comes in as my best choices but I would also still find myself looking at the weather channel on tv. But at least I am covering all areas which is bound to give me the best of the best in results. I also notice that the weather channel is the only one that gave this winter storm a name Leon which I tend to wonder when did we start naming the Winter Storms? Humm maybe one I should look up… Well everyone stay safe and warm…enjoy the snow….and keep yourself posted to your favorite weather website…..
Love this photo.. The cold crisp snow… All of us down South are looking forward to Snow coming, We don’t hardly get it so this rare appearance thrills us. At least most of us some just hate but I am thrilled with seeing it fall! I was born in Baltimore so maybe its the North coming out but I do enjoy this long awaited experience of all that white and then snow cream….
In my reading for this class Web 110 we are talking about Search Engines you know those places you go to find all you are looking for on the Internet and its huge world. Well I had no idea there was sooo many of them. I tend to use http://www.yahoo.com the most, my daughter brags on http://google.com I find Yahoo better well its user friendly, easy to get too. Has a lot to offer. I comment on their stories a lot and also I like the way it presents the news. I have my personal email through yahoo and well I can find anything through its sources. Comes up with a lot of hits now grant it you get a little bit of everything but that’s when you have to be picky and narrow down what you are seeking. I didn’t know till my reading that if you put “quotation marks” with the word it will give you information on the Exact Phrase not all the thes and ofs will be included, this helps in narrowing your search down and finding just what you need. As said I like Yahoo.com but Google. com is good for its maps and finding places. You can even see a picture of the place such as my house on Google Maps and gives the directions everything you need if you are planning a trip. They have webcams all over the place and its really neat to seek out places. Kind of a see it before you get there deal. These two search engines have their pluses and minuses but its really a person’s own choice which one to go with but remember there are a lot of them so don’t get overwhelmed and I am sure you will find the right one for your Internet hunting. But in the end finding the information you need is the success of it all.
Welcome to the world of blogging! This is a new experience for me, never having blogged before unless you count a class blog on CCCC. Don’t think Pinterest is considered a blog, its a virtual pin board as they say. So what is blogging? So far it seems to be a space to express your thoughts no matter how sane or smart! So far my inner writing self is loving this website. I have an outlet for poetry on a poetry site I belong to, an outlet for creating boards and finding great tips and embracing my creative self on Pinterest.so http://wordpress.com has truly introduce me to yet another outlet. Its for my Web110 class to introduce an website and I know a lot of them:) but it something else in some ways its like a journal. although not secret thoughts because I am able to speak out and express my thoughts on well whatever is on my mind soo who knows whats going to be here! So far I covered Pinterest, the Humane society, Amazon, North Carolina Historic sites and now Word press blog as noted all are wonderful websites that I hope all who have the interest explore. Each in its own way is a outlet that can’t be beat! So thanks Mr F. for introducing me and the others to this concept, hope they are enjoying it as I am. Just something about the power of words, making yourself heard when you wonder “Is anyone listening” really listening? I wonder that often and now I glad to have this place. Its easy, just register, pick how you want your blog to look, and write. some parts still need work from me, not sure about tags, and don’t know really know how many people I am reaching but hey that’s not an issue with me right now. I also enjoyed commenting on other posts, a lot of interesting theories out there. oh yeah I can do this for free or pay and make it more impressive. My cheap self will stick to free:) So if you need an outlet and enjoying letting your two cents be known in a way that won’t cause a battle, check out Word Press and look at it as another stress reliever in the overall skein of life…
Another great website in my opinion, one I knew of for years but rediscover it last semester when taking a North Carolina history class online. its http://www.nchistoricsites.org North Carolina Historic Sites is a group of 27 amazing places that opens the doors to the past and the lives of North Carolina where visiting these sites can show you a world of imagination stir your spirits and lift you up like no other places can. I have heard of all of these sites through my work at the library but one which I picked as my project last semester. Historic Stagville Plantation is the oldest plantation in North Carolina, located in Durham. It along with 26 more sites like Tryon Palace, the USS Battleship and the Thomas Wolfe Memorial opens our eyes to a world that is waiting for us to discover. I learned that Historic Stagville had over 900 slaves at one time and you can see their fingertips in the brick where they built their own houses! All this and more can be read about and discovered through the historic sites website. Visit the site, plan a trip and learn of all North Carolina has to offer. History is here all we have to do is look for it! Check out the North Carolina Historic Sites.
North Carolina Historic Sites is a division of the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources Office of Archives & History.
Ok if there is one thing I love doing more than well reading, it acquiring the books I love and doing it cheaply. Welcome to Amazon! Now that I no longer am employed by our local library and absolutely refused to go there due to how I was let go. I mean really 27 years there and budget cuts not fair but it hasn’t stopped my Love of books. So what if I am running out of space collecting them. No I don’t want a kindle. I enjoy the feel of a book “a real book” in my hands turning the pages embracing its worth. Amazon helps me do this! All I have to do is log on and just type in what I am wanting and Yah there it is! books by my favorite authors Janet Evanovich, Sue Grafton and lately Lisa Garner and Connie Shelton among others. Just look, put it in my cart I can buy it now or save it for later or when I have money to spare. I even bought a bed frame on Amazon. Seriously this is a great place to shop. You can find the cheapest price and the seller with a 99 rating and your done. so check it out (you get to keep it too!). Wonderful Place.
We are getting a new kitty, picked her out Tues but we now have to wait a couple weeks because she went to the vet to be spayed and they found a place on her that needs attention so in order for our other cat to not be infected we have to wait and get her in two weeks or get another cat. But how can one leave this one for another. We can’t so Simba Isabelle Davis will be home soon.
www.humanesociety.com in your area. they have pets waiting for you and its a cheap bargain. Our cat will be spayed, first shots and microchip all for $50 I sure prices vary in other places but your saving a life too.
